Move To The United States
There's not that much advice for the population writ large with AGI apart from be informed and prepare to move quickly. However, the one bit of advice that I am sure about is that you should, for your own economic wellbeing, move to the US. I mean, in some sense, this is not surprising. For the average person in the world, this advice would've served you well for basically all of the past century. But today, the reasons are different.
The current political hostility does not affect the vast majority of immigrants, and even still it should be overcome.
Why?
AI-poor countries will be poor. Rudolf Laine has the best description of what happens to those in countries that do not have, or ban, AIs in their economy. They get slowly outcompeted, and their populations remain reliant on the generosity of the AI-rich, if they're lucky, or their population falls to subsistence levels. Think about the horses sent to the glue factory after the automobile.
AI-poor countries will continue to be poor. Compute is the world's most valuable commodity, and, given the scale of the data centers that will need to be deployed for agents that can run the entire economy, they will be a scarce resource.
You may be able to get US UBI. If you're a US citizen, you can take some solace in the lucky position that you're in. Invest a bit in the stock market. But, for the rest of the world, there is no guarantee whether you will. If you come, legally, there is some hope that you may be able to benefit — though notably immigrants were not eligible for COVID relief.
You want to participate in the new agent economy. The arrival of AGI will bring about vast wealth inequality. The generators of value in the new economy will be AI agents controlled by humans (unless things go really well, in which case we get the AIs for science and not the autonomous superintelligence, or really poorly, in which case we die). In any case, you would like to be in control of some of these agents, so that you can participate in this new economy, and try to capture some value.
What does this mean? All the regular ways that you can immigrate to the US.
Choose to study in the US if you can afford it.
Get a job in the US — it may be slightly easier if you're a nonprofit.
Consider building up a profile to be able for an O-1 visa, then switch to a green card.
